Welcome to R.O.V.E.R.
ROVER (Recommended Online Video Education Resources) is the video streaming site for Saskatchewan teachers and students in the PreK-12 education system. It is managed and maintained by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education.
Users have the convenience of immediate access to streamed, educational videos known as video-on-demand. ROVER videos are housed on a server located in each school so there are no bandwidth issues, resulting in better picture quality and continuous play of videos without pauses. ROVER is only accessible from within Saskatchewan schools or school division offices.
There are over 600 videos on ROVER that can be accessed by teachers and students to enhance learning in the classroom. All the videos found on this site have been evaluated by educational professionals and recommended to support Saskatchewan's K-12 curricula. The ROVER collection of videos continues to evolve as new videos are added annually and old videos expire.
The newest 2011 videos purchased for ROVER may or may not be available at your school yet. If you are having difficulties finding a recommended video from a Core or Additional Resource List, please:

About ROVER
- On the main page banner, there are links to search for curriculum recommended video resources. You can search for videos by Grade, Subject, browse a complete list of videos in All Videos, or review a list of newly added videos in New Videos.
- A quick search can be done by entering a term in the search box located in the top right corner. The search engine searches through video titles and descriptions that match your search term.
- A more detailed search can be done by clicking on Advanced Search and searching by one or any combination of the following elements - title, keywords, grade, subject, and/or number.
- Once your search brings up a list of videos, you can get more information on that specific title by going to Go To Detailed Description. This information may include a description, a picture, copyright information, length, expiry date, recommended uses for specific grades, subjects, and learning outcomes, and related resources (i.e., teacher's guide accompanying the video or link to related website).
- Videos can be played by either clicking on the screenshot or the Watch Video button.
- Play the video from an individual school computer or use a projector for classroom viewing. The bar below the video screen allows you to make the picture full-screen, adjust the volume as needed, pause, stop, rewind or fast forward by sliding the timeline.
- ROVER is set up to be user-friendly so that you can find what you need quickly and efficiently. If you have any difficulties navigating this site, do not hesitate to contact us with your comments.
- The Ministry of Education has a team of educational professionals who select and evaluate learning resources. Resources are located using product catalogues, video reviews in journals, and recommendations from teachers in the field.
- The following criteria will be considered when selecting videos: visual/sound quality, content must support curriculum outcomes, social considerations (fair and equitable), support current ministry priorities (e.g., First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Content and Perspectives), instructional design, qualifications of developer (preference to Saskatchewan or Canadian resources), and cost.
- Preference is also given to programs with newer production dates. The ministry is able to negotiate video licenses for rights for terms of approximately five years. It is important that the purchased video for streaming is as relevant five years from now as it is the day it is added to ROVER.
If you are using a video in your classroom that you feel supports Saskatchewan curricula and should be part of the ROVER streaming collection, please send the following information to networkservices@gov.sk.ca
- video title
- producer or distributor
- applicable to which subject/grade level/unit
- your name and school
Any suggestions received will be seriously considered and the videos will be entered into the ministry's standard evaluation process to determine a curriculum fit and ROVER suitability.
- The ministry negotiates licensing agreements that allow us to legally stream a video for a determined period of time to a determined audience (in this case, the education sector in Saskatchewan). Usually, we have arranged for the end of these agreements to coincide with the end of the school year to aid teachers in their planning.
- The expiry date is posted clearly on the description page for each video, so that users can be aware when the video will no longer be available on ROVER. After a program expires, it is removed from the online catalogue.
- The licensing agreements for rights are legal copyright agreements and the ministry must abide by the terms and conditions, specifically the expiry rights of the videos, set out in these agreements.
- As videos expire, new videos are added annually to a continuously evolving ROVER collection. As Saskatchewan curricula is continually being developed, this provides opportunities to purchase new support resources for new curricula.
- This system is integrated into your school's network. Software installations should not be required on any end-user computers as the system is using Flash which is a common Internet software.
- The video collection is housed on a local server, known as the ROVER box, located within the school network; so usage will not affect inbound or outbound CommunityNet or Internet traffic.
- Video streaming servers are remotely maintained and upgraded from the main server which is housed in Regina. The technical goal is for the service to require as little attention as possible at the school site. Schools will not be required to download new video resources to their server. The addition of new videos to the collection will follow an automated download from the main server to the school's site's server.
- As computers become more prevalent in our schools and our lives, streaming seems like a natural progression in the technology available to support educational goals. This upgrade supports the Ministry of Education's continued commitment to deliver quality services for greater access to curriculum-based recommended video resources.
- The two primary benefits for a conversion to ROVER include the overall cost saving benefit and the quality of secure, on-demand service that ROVER delivers.
- Users will have immediate access to a wide variety of videos that are easily searchable, previewed ahead of classroom use to aid in lesson planning, and easily viewed by individuals or in a class-setting at the click of a mouse.
