Two Spirited

This program is about a gay man who followed his passion for women's jingle dancing and sewing costumes. This young man faced rejection from an Elder at a Kamloops pow wow, but managed to recover his self-esteem. It also tells of the history of two-spirited people in the First Nations culture. Two Spirited is the story of Rodney "Geeyo" Poucette's encounter with prejudice when he competes as a Jingle Dress dancer - a category normally reserved for women. During a powwow, an Elder discovers that Geeyo is a man and takes away his championship. Deeply humiliated, he stops dancing. Six years later, he makes a triumphant return to the powwow arena, realizing that the only way to change people's minds is to walk proudly, while being true to one's spirit. This program also describes the history of two-spirited people in the First Nations culture.
